Dr Cheah Suan Choo

Dr. Cheah Suan Choo was appointed as the CSO of ACGT in August 2006 to spearhead the establishment of the centre. She holds a BSc (Hons) and an MSc degree in Genetics from the University of Malaya. In 1982, she earned a PhD in Microbiological Chemistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK under the Commonwealth Scholarship Award and continued with post-doctoral research in bacterial genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US. She graduated with an Executive MBA from the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in 2004. Dr. Cheah has over 25 years’ experience in oil palm R&D. Prior to joining ACGT, she served as a Senior Research Fellow and the Head of the Advanced Biotechnology and Breeding Centre at the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB). She has conducted and managed R&D projects in the areas of microbiology, genetic engineering and genomics. Among her major achievements is the introduction of the DNA fingerprinting technique to the oil palm industry in 1996 for quality control in tissue culture. She has published over 110 scientific papers and is co-inventor of 3 patents on oil palm genetic markers and promoter sequences.
